“Essentially, Abaku is ‘scrabble with numbers’ but instead of words you are creating equations. On the tournament day we used Swiss-system in which players with similar level of experience play against each other, ” explains Tomáš Blumenstein, Mensa International, Director for Small National Mensas, who was managing the finale day. The organizers expect the game and league to help the children find the joy in math again. And looking at the number of students involved and their zeal expectations of the organizers are not wrong. “At the beginning of the finale day it was lively and friendly atmosphere all around, but somewhere from around the 5th of 7th round there was palpably intense atmosphere and emotions emerged, ” happily comments one the organizers, teacher and game propagator Vladimír Tesař. “It was something extraordinary to see both 3rd and 9th graders shrieking and howling happily, rooting for their friends during the announcement of the winners.
